On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, senior lecturer from the University Department of Nursing Vesna Mijoč defended her doctoral thesis "The influence of physical activity and sleep hygiene on the quality of sleep in the elderly" at the Faculty of Kinesiology of the University of Zagreb and earned the title of Doctor of Science!
The thesis was created under the mentorship of Assoc. prof. Damir Erceg, PhD, and the aim of the work was to determine the impact of physical activity intervention carried out in the morning and afternoon and sleep hygiene on the quality of sleep in elderly people. In this research, 76 subjects over the age of 65 were randomly divided into three groups of subjects: 1) morning group (N = 30), which performed physical activity in the morning hours; 2) afternoon group (N = 23), which carried out the same activity in the afternoon; and 3) sleep hygiene group (N = 23), which implemented a sleep hygiene intervention. The intervention lasted four weeks, and the following methods were used: i) sleep diary (going to sleep and waking up); ii) subjective assessment of sleep quality measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Questionnaire; iii) objective assessment of physical activity and sleep quality in the morning and afternoon groups measured by GENEActive accelerometry.
