Dr Ana Haramina and Assist. Prof. Marija Sertić at an International Scientific Conference in Pula
Dr Ana Haramina and Assist. Prof. Marija Sertić, PhD, participated in the international scientific conference “22nd Mate Demarin Days: Tradition and Contemporary Approaches in Education – A Timeless Encounter,” held in Pula from 23 to 24 April 2026. At the conference, they presented a paper titled “Psychological Development of Students and the Ethics of Care in Higher Education.”

Their presentation focused on the developmental stage of students, understood through the concept of emerging adulthood—a life phase marked by identity exploration, reflection on values, the development of self-understanding, and gradual personal and social maturation. It was emphasized that the university is not only a place for acquiring knowledge and professional competencies, but also an important environment for students’ personal, social, and moral development.
Building on these developmental characteristics, the authors presented key principles of the ethics of care as developed by Nel Noddings, along with her model of moral education. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of caring and high-quality relationships within the university community, fostered through the example set by teachers, dialogue, student engagement in care practices, and the affirmation of students’ strengths and values.
In conclusion, it was highlighted that the ethics of care does not diminish the importance of academic achievement and professional competence, but rather complements them by emphasizing empathy, responsibility, cooperation, and the quality of interpersonal relationships. Such an approach can contribute to a more humane higher education system and to the development of a university community that promotes excellence, personal growth, and the mental well-being of both students and staff.
