Assistant Luka Poslon successfully defended doctoral dissertation

Our assistant Luka Poslon, from Digital Healthcare Ethics Laboratory (Digit-HeaL), defended his doctoral dissertation on Thursday, 23 April, at the Faculty of Croatian Studies of the University of Zagreb and was awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Science.

The doctoral thesis titled Ethical-epistemological Aspects of the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare was completed under the supervision of Associate Professor Sandro Skansi and Associate Professor Anto Čartolovni.

The dissertation examines the ethical and epistemological challenges associated with the use of AI systems in healthcare, with particular focus on explainable AI. It builds on the growing reliance on complex AI systems that frequently function as “black boxes,” limiting transparency and making their decision-making processes difficult to interpret. This lack of explainability also raises important concerns regarding the validity of informed consent in clinical practice. In this context, the need to develop approaches that enable greater transparency and explainability is emphasized, in order to strengthen trust in the technology and ensure its ethically acceptable application in healthcare. Overall, the thesis deepens the understanding of the ethical and epistemological dimensions of AI in medicine and contributes to the development of frameworks for its responsible implementation.

As a doctoral candidate of the Croatian Science Foundation, Luka Poslon enrolled in the philosophy doctoral study program in the academic year 2021/2022. The work was carried out within the "Career Development Project for Early-Career Researchers – Training of New PhD Holders" (DOK-2021-02-9366).

The committee, composed of Full Professor Ivo Džinić (chair), Associate Professor Ivana Gregurić (member), and Assistant Professor Petar Tomev Mitrikeski (member), assessed the doctoral dissertation with the highest grade, summa cum laude.
