Faculty of Health Sciences Held the Fourth Continuing Education Course “New Guidelines in the Classification and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers”

Organised by the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Catholic University of Croatia, the European Wound Management Association (EWMA) and Stoma Medical, the fourth continuing education course “New Guidelines in the Classification and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers” was held on Thursday, 6 November 2025.


The course gathered more than 100 participants with the aim of strengthening interdisciplinary cooperation, improving standardised procedures, and exchanging the latest scientific insights in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers.
 


The programme opened with introductory remarks by Prof. Marta Čivljak, Ph.D., followed by a presentation from Prof. Dimitri Beeckman, Ph.D., President of EWMA, who introduced current European educational projects and initiatives in nursing. Asst. Prof. Sandra Marinović Kulišić, Ph.D., provided an overview of the latest guidelines for pressure ulcer classification and treatment, while Asst. Prof. Elvira Lazić Mosler, Ph.D., emphasised the importance of a structured approach to care and prevention.
 


Vesna Konjevoda, Ph.D. (University Hospital Sveti Duh), presented a comprehensive interprofessional approach through a clinical case example, and Asst. Prof. Mirna Žulec, Ph.D., analysed the role of informal caregivers in caring for individuals with pressure ulcers. After discussion and a short break, the programme continued with expert presentations from clinical practice.

Ana Lamza, M.D. (University Hospital Sveti Duh), spoke about the risks of pressure ulcers following major surgical procedures and later about the application of mobile negative-pressure therapy in pressure ulcer treatment. Vlasta Vučevac, M.D., President of HDPM, presented the specifics of palliative care for patients with pressure ulcers. Suzana Tunuković, M.D. (Stoma Medical), introduced advances in biomaterial development and their increasingly significant application in clinical practice.

The final part of the course featured a hands-on workshop, “Optimal Combinations of Local Pressure Ulcer Therapy,” led by Ida Kovačić Karapandžić, mag. med. techn., which included practical demonstrations of local treatment for all stages of pressure ulcers.
