Article by PhD Mijoč and associates published in the Dutch Elsevier
On Monday, March 3, 2025, the Dutch publishing house Elsevier published the paper "Self-criticism, self-encouragement, and exam emotions: A cross-sectional study of Croatian health students", co-authored by Vesna Mijoč, PhD from the University Department of Nursing and others.
The paper presents the results of a study that examined the relationship between exam emotions, self-criticism and encouragement in 203 nursing and physiotherapy students and related sociodemographic factors. The Self-Criticism and Self-Encouragement Questionnaire and the Emotion Test Questionnaire were used, with parametric and non-parametric tests with a 95% confidence interval used for the analysis.
The results showed that there is a relationship between self-criticism and negative emotions, while self-encouragement refers to positive feelings. Age influenced emotions such as joy and helplessness, while life situations influenced anxiety and shame. Female students showed higher levels of anger and anxiety. Also, students living in student dormitories face increased shame and anxiety due to academic pressure related to housing security. Emphasizing student well-being, improving innovative teaching and updating preclinical simulation laboratories are key to mastering skills before real-life practice.
