Archival Research in Florence

From June 8 to 11, 2026, members of the research team for the project "Shaping the Territorial State in Late Medieval Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia: Socio-Political and Administrative Changes"—Professor Emeritus Mladen Ančić, Antun Nekić, PhD, and Professor Ivan Majnarić—conducted archival research at the State Archives of Florence (Archivio di Stato di Firenze). The main goal of the research was to locate and extract relevant archival material, an objective approached systematically and through a collaborative effort due to the specific historical development of Florentine administration and the nature of its document preservation.

Given the immense volume and complexity of the material, the research team applied a method of coordinated joint review of the same archival collections. This approach proved to be a more productive working model than individual research, allowing for a faster and more comprehensive examination of the documents. The focus was on a detailed review and analysis of the Consulte e pratiche, Mercanzia, and Signori collections. The discovered data will serve as an excellent foundation for shaping upcoming scientific insights and papers within the scope of the project.
