A round table titled “The Battle of Mohács as a Turning Point in Hungarian and Croatian History” was held on 23 March 2026, co-organized by the Consulate General of Hungary in Osijek and the Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek.
Alongside Prof. Hrvoje Kekez, PhD, leader of the project “The Battle of Krbava (1493) – Context, Course, Consequences and Perception” funded by the Catholic University of Croatia, participants included Assoc. Prof. Kornelija Jurin Starčević, PhD, from the Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb; Dr. Norbert Tóth, Deputy Director of the Hungarian National Archives and Head of the Hungarian Research Group for Medieval Studies; and Dr. Szabolcs Varga from the Institute of History at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest.
The round table addressed the historical context, significance, course, and consequences of the renowned Battle of Mohács of 1526, as well as perspectives from Hungarian and Croatian historiography on the topic. The importance of the Battle of Krbava of 1493 and its influence on subsequent events was also emphasized.
The particular value of such round tables lies in bringing together Croatian and Hungarian historians who, through dialogue and comparison of interpretations, contribute to a deeper understanding of shared history and to strengthening scientific cooperation. The active participation of a large audience, which concluded the event with numerous questions, further confirmed the strong interest in this topic and the importance of its continued research and public discussion.
