Continued research in Zadar and Dubrovnik

As part of the research activities conducted within the Croatian Science Foundation project “The Formation of the Territorial State in Late Medieval Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia: Socio-Political and Administrative Transformations” (CroDaSTrans, IP-2025-02-4345), carried out at the Catholic University of Croatia, project associate Francesco Bettarini, PhD, conducted archival research in Zadar and Dubrovnik.

Dr. Bettarini focused on trade and diplomatic networks between Italian and Dalmatian communes across the Adriatic in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, with particular emphasis on individuals connected to persons appearing in the corpus of letters and business records of the Chiarini family.

The research visit began at the State Archives in Zadar, where Dr. Bettarini analysed records documenting the presence and activities of Italian merchant families on the eastern Adriatic coast from July 7 to 11. He then continued his research at the State Archives in Dubrovnik from July 13 to 18, focusing on chancery collections.
