History Students Conduct Field Research at Modruš, Brinje, and Oštarije Sites
Students of the undergraduate and graduate history programmes participated on 16 October 2025 in a day-long field research project exploring the sites of the medieval fortified towns of Modruš and Brinje, as well as the Marian Sanctuary of Our Lady of Miracles in Oštarije.

The research was led by Prof. Hrvoje Kekez, Ph.D., Juraj Balić, Ph.D., from the Croatian Institute of History (Zagreb), and Filip Hren, Ph.D., who also serves as the head of the project From Defensive Rampart to “Military Reservoir”: The Evolution of the Frontier Soldier from the 16th to the 18th Century (Preliminary Research), within which the fieldwork was conducted.
At these sites, students gained hands-on experience in fieldwork and site reconnaissance, including surveying and measuring the preserved remains of these historically significant medieval fortifications.
