Professor Sedak and Student Karolj Deliver Lectures on Communication and the Attention Economy at Economics Days in Kutina

Representatives of the Catholic University of Croatia participated in the Economics Days event, held from 13 to 17 April at the Tina Ujević Secondary School in Kutina, with the aim of connecting theoretical knowledge and practical skills of students in economics-oriented programmes.

As part of the programme, Kristijan Sedak, PhD, from the University Department of Communication Studies, and graduate student Maja Karolj (Intercultural Communication and Journalism track) delivered lectures on Wednesday in the field of communication sciences and presented the University’s study programmes to first- and fourth-year secondary school students.

Dr. Sedak’s lecture, “The Boredom Killer,” used a humorous story about “confused Marko” to offer practical techniques for overcoming stage fright, delivering effective public presentations, and maintaining audience attention. Students gained insight into the importance of body language, voice, and presentation structure in both educational and future professional contexts.

In her interactive lecture, “Who Profits from Your Scrolling?” Maja Karolj explained the concept of the attention economy and how digital platforms, influencers, and advertisers monetize user activity. Using examples relevant to Generation Z, students became more aware of their own digital habits and ways to manage their attention more actively.

Through participation in Economics Days, the Catholic University of Croatia continues to strengthen cooperation with secondary schools by bringing contemporary communication and social topics closer to students, supporting their personal and career development.
